You may need to transfer money abroad for various reasons, such as to provide financial support to relatives or pay for freelance services.

Traditional bank transfers can take longer and be costly due to high fees. To avoid inconvenience, Ukrainians often look for alternative ways to send money abroad.

In this guide, we will explain in detail how to transfer money to another country using Wise, which currencies are supported, whether there are any limits, and what advantages and disadvantages you should consider.

What Is Wise, and How Does It Work for Ukrainian Residents?

Wise is an international money transfer service founded in 2011. Its activities are regulated by the British financial authority FCA, which guarantees secure transactions. As of 2025, the service is available in over 160 countries.

Wise operates on a P2P basis: the money involved in transfers is exchanged within the system without leaving the country. This eliminates cross-border fees and makes transactions significantly cheaper than through banks.

Wise has partner banks and payment providers in different countries. For example, if you send money from Poland to Ukraine:

  • In the sender's country, the funds are credited to Wise's partner account in Polish zloty (PLN).
  • In Ukraine, the same amount (including the exchange rate and commission) is sent to the recipient from a local bank account in Ukrainian hryvnia (UAH).

This scheme works when funds are sent in local currencies, as in the example above. However, situations often arise when a user needs to send a non-local currency, for example, euros from Ukraine to Germany. Since our country is not part of the SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area), such payments are made through the SWIFT system. This means the money will go through several intermediary banks, each of which may charge a commission.

Can I send hryvnia (UAH) abroad via Wise?

Due to currency restrictions imposed by the National Bank of Ukraine, the service's functionality for Ukrainian users is limited. Wise digital cards have been unavailable since 2022, but if you already have one, you can use it until its expiration date. Also, starting in 2023, Wise transfers from Ukraine in UAH have been prohibited.

As an alternative, the service offers 29 other currencies that can be used for transactions. For example, you can exchange hryvnia for dollars, euros, or another currency, and then make a transfer abroad.

What currencies are available for receiving?

Users abroad can receive transfers in 51 currencies, including the euro, US dollar, Polish zloty, Czech koruna, and others. The full list is published on the service's official website.

Wise Account Registration and Verification

To access the platform's services, you need to create an account using the web version or the Wise app. This procedure is free and takes a few minutes:

  • On the Wise website or in the app, click "Register."
  • Enter your email address, after which you will receive a confirmation email with a link.
  • Select the type of account — "Personal" or "Business."
  • Enter your country of residence and phone number. Confirm your contact details with an SMS code.
  • Create a strong password.
  • Add your postal code and address.

Wise is a financial platform, and like any bank, it needs to know who is using its services. Therefore, after registration, users undergo verification. Usually, it is enough to upload a photo of your passport or ID card and confirm your address. In some cases, you may need to take a selfie with your document or provide information about the origin of the funds, for example, if the transfer amount is large or if required by local laws.

Documents are verified within one business day. You will receive a notification by email as soon as the verification is complete.

How to Send Money in Foreign Currency via Wise?

  • Confirm the transfer. Check all the details and complete the payment following Wise's instructions.

Features of UAH Transfers with Wise

How much can you send abroad, how long does the conversion take, and which banks work with Wise? Let's take a look at the details of Wise transfers:

Limits and restrictions on sending money from Ukraine

According to the NBU regulations, the amount of money transferred abroad must not exceed 100,000 UAH per month.

Which banks work with Wise in Ukraine?

You can pay for the transaction by making a transfer through Privatbank, Monobank, PUMB, and other major banks in Ukraine.

ObmenAT24 also provides services for working with Wise. You can top up Wise with cash and withdraw money.

How do conversion and crediting work?

Wise uses the real interbank exchange rate that forms the market. When you create a transfer, the rates are fixed for a short period. If you pay for the transfer quickly, you will receive exactly this rate, and in case of a delay, you will receive the current average market rates valid at the time of receipt of funds.

Currency conversion can take up to 2 business days, after which the funds are credited. The calculator on the Wise website always shows the estimated delivery time for the transfer. The speed depends on the currency and can vary from a few seconds to 2-3 days.

How Do I Receive Money via Wise Abroad?

Let's figure out what information is needed to receive a transfer.

What methods of receiving funds are available?

The recipient can use:

  • A bank account in their country: Wise pays through local banking networks or via SWIFT.
  • A Wise account: The funds are credited to the service balance and can then be withdrawn, invested, or spent.

Which countries can you send money to?

From Ukraine, you can send money to 90 countries, including Germany, Poland, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, the US, China, and others.

What information does the recipient need?

The recipient must share their account details with the sender. When the money arrives in the balance, the recipient will be notified by Wise or their bank. They will then be able to use it — no additional information is required.

How to Send Money to Your Account Abroad?

If you have an account with a foreign bank, you can transfer funds to it using Wise. To do this, simply enter the account details when sending funds. For example, you can make a money transfer to your account in a German bank using a EUR card issued by a Ukrainian financial institution.

Topping up your personal Wise multi-currency account

It is not yet possible to open a multi-currency account in Ukraine, but this feature is available to citizens of our country who are temporarily residing abroad. In this case, you will need to provide the service with proof of your actual location. This can be a utility bill or a rental agreement in your name.

While abroad, you can deposit funds into your Wise multi-currency account. To do this, click "Top up balance" on the main page of the website or in the Wise app, specify the amount, currency, and payment method, and then complete the transaction by following the prompts.

The difference between a regular transfer and a transfer to your account

Sending money via Wise to your bank account is considered a regular international transfer that can be made from Ukraine. You can then withdraw this money in cash, transfer it to another bank, or spend it.

Managing a Wise multi-currency account is not available in Ukraine — this is the main difference compared to a regular transfer. However, if you top up your account abroad, you can later convert the funds into another currency or use them to pay for purchases using your Wise card.

Our service allows you to exchange Wise to USDT quickly and profitably.
